FAQ

What is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that emphasizes kicking techniques. It has many hand and foot techniques in common with other Chinese, Japanese and Korean martial arts, but can be distinguished by its dynamic style and high spinning kicks. RVATKD practices the same style of taekwondo that continues to be a full medal competition sport in the Olympics.
Who’s it for? I thought Taekwondo was just for kids.
RVATKD’s membership includes a wide age range, starting at 8 years old. There is no maximum age limit.
I don’t feel like I’m in very good shape right now. Is now a good time to join?
Absolutely! There's no minimum conditioning requirement for joining, and there’s no time like the present. The benefits are many and include improved cardiovascular conditioning, increased self-confidence, a greater ability to handle stressful situations, knowledge of self-defense, and a chance to experience something totally outside of most people's daily lives. Besides, it’s the job of the instructor to tailor the class to the widely varying abilities of those who attend.
Will I get hurt?
While any physical activity involves risk, everyone is very carefully supervised and instructed according to strict guidelines established by the World Taekwondo Federation and the Kukkiwon.
Does it cost anything?
1) Taekwondo classes are available at a nominal fee to residents of the Church Hill neighborhood. If you live outside Church Hill, please contact us for more information through our Join Us page.
2) There's no uniform requirement up front, but if you decide you want to stick with taekwondo you'll need to purchase a basic uniform before your first promotion test at a cost of about $25. Your instructor can help you get a uniform or you can get one yourself online (as long as it's the correct type).
Can I earn a black belt? How long will that take?
Absolutely! RVATKD trains with the goal of promoting members who wish to do so to Kukkiwon 1st dan (degree) black belt certification and beyond. The time it takes you to reach that goal depends on many things, but mainly on how consistently you're able to train.
Sounds great, how do I get started?
